FROM THE MOUTH: Yup, this is hop injected and I would say the label is true to it's character. It is full bodied and the hops dont just linger on your tongue- they speed all the way down your throat and burn rubber. Very nicely blended with a bit of coffee flavor at the end. A-

C-NOTE

311 BOTTLES OF BEER ON THE WALL
February 24, 2012 (Friday)
C-NOTE (Imperial Pale Ale)
1 pint 6 fluid ounces, 6.9% ALC. BY VOL.
LOMPOC Brewing , Portland Oregon
+++++
FROM THE LABEL: "Lompoc beer means local beer"

"100 IBU" Here is a definition of IBU - International Bittering Units. This is a measure of the actual bitterness of a beer as contributed by the alpha acid from hops. Because the apparent bitterness of a beer is subjective to the taste of the drinker and the balancing malt sweetness of the beer this is not always an accurate measure of the "hoppiness" of a beer. But, generally speaking, beers with IBUs of less than 20 have little to no apparent hops presence. Beers with IBUs from 20 to 45 are the most common and have mild to pronounced hops presence. Beers with IBUs greater than 45 are heavily hopped and can be quite bitter.

FROM THE PAPER: ( The Micro Brew Review) "To call C-NOTE very hoppy would be an understatement. It's brewed with the seven "C" hops (Crystal, Cluster, Cascade, Chinook, Centennial, Columbus and Challenger) and pushes the bitterness limit to 100 IBU. Above the sheen of the amber beer, big bubbles pop away. Nutty, biscuity scents fill out this aromatic beer's sweet orange and caramel bouquet. Juicy orange and dank pine blossom above C-NOTE's toffee, toasty malt backbone, which gains a nutty complexity during the swallow. While this beer is undoubtedly focusing on its hop flavors and aggressive bitterness, it's beauty is in its balance: Despite its high IBU count, its malt foundation props up the headlining citrusy, piney hops As it wraps up a dry on the tongue, lingering toast and citrus flavors remain."

FROM THE MOUTH: So, this has 100 IBU's which means it is heavily hopped! Yippee, I finally have a beer that defines what heavy hopping tastes like!!! So we will automatically give this a 5 for our hop rating and possibly I will have to readjust some of the beers if this is indeed a 5. Defintion of HOPPY according to THE GREAT BEER GUIDE: Herbal, zesty, earthy, cedary, piney, appetizingly bitter. THAT'S my beer! You can smell the hops before you taste them. A

FROM THE LABEL: "Seasonal Alpine- style Schwarzbier."

In case you are like me and don't know what Schwarzbier means: Schwarzbier, or "black beer", is a German dark lager beer. It has an opaque, black colour and a full, chocolatey or coffee flavour. Although they share some similar flavours they are milder tasting and less bitter than British stouts or porters, owing to the use of lager rather than ale yeast and no roasted barley.

FROM THE MOUTH: Delicious...the definition is right on and look at that gorgeous dark black beer with a finger foam pour- feeling good about that! It is very smooth, not bitter and has a mild coffee flavor. Only 5% alcohol so I am drinking the whole bottle! LOVE the label: I miss Steamboat...A

February 7, 2012 (Tuesday)
STOUT- OATMEAL STOUT
12 fluid ounces, no alchohol content listed
Brewed and Bottled by Alaskan Brewing Co, Juneau, AK

FROM THE BOTTLE: Nothing on the label so I will give you some info on what is an Oatmeal stout:
Oatmeal stout is a stout with a proportion of oats, normally a maximum of 30%, added during the brewing process. Even though a larger proportion of oats in beer can lead to a bitter or astringent taste,[16] during the medieval period in Europe, oats were a common ingredient in ale,[17] and proportions up to 35% were standard. However, despite some areas of Europe, such as Norway, still clinging to the use of oats in brewing until the early part of the 20th century, the practice had largely died out by the 16th century, so much so that in 1513 Tudor sailors refused to drink oat beer offered to them because of the bitter flavour.

FROM THE MOUTH: Well, this is actually my first Stout, I am embarressed to say and the reason for this blog- Carpe Diem! Now for the tasting.. a decidedly full beer - full taste and complex flavors. Heavy on the coffee, then a bit of chocolate and finish with a pleasant burned flavor ( I know sounds wrong but but it is a result from highly kilned barely or malt in some stouts). I commend Alaskan for this delicious swirl of flavors. I like it. A- (still have to have more Stouts to really know for sure!)

AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 BEERS
