WIDMER BROTHERS HEFEWEIZEN

116 BOTTLES OF BEER ON THE WALL
September 7, 2012 (Friday in Hungry Horse Montana)
WIDMER BROTHERS HEFEWEIZEN
22 FL. OZ. (I PINT 6 FL. OZ.), 4.9% ( not on label)
Widmer Brothers Brewing Company, Portland , Oregon

FROM THE LABEL: " Uncompromised and unfiltered since 1984. The brother of invention."

FROM THE MOUTH: AMERICAN PALE WHEAT ALE: This was overall disappointing for me(first of all I am splitting it with my husband) -I am sitting in Hungry Horse Montana ( 10 miles away from Glacier National Park) drinking a beer on an old wood porch in a small dive of a restaurant ( I brought my own beer- they didnt' serve alcohol) and I get this. It didn't matter that I had to drink it out of a paper pepsi cup- it was slightly fruity, mostly watery and flat with a dry aftertaste. I left the beer in my cup...that tells it all.  D

BELHAVEN SCOTTISH ALE

117 BOTTLES OF BEER ON THE WALL

September 6, 2012 (Thursday)
BELAHAVEN SCOTTISH ALE
1pt. .0.9. fl. oz. 500ml., Alc. 5.2% by Vol.
Brewed and Bottled by Belhaven Brewery, Dunbar, East Lothian, Scotland
+

FROM THE LABEL: "The Belhaven Brewery is one of Scotlands oldest regional breweries dating back to 1719. Belhaven Scottish Ale is a fully rounded ale, a complex mix of malt and hops, producing Belhaven's easily recognised malted and nutty flavor."

FROM THE MOUTH : SCOTTISH ALE: Beautiful color and a nice malty toffee smell but....aside from the toffee malt the overall taste is metallic AND you are certain that you have smoked a cig or at least licked the ash tray. What an interesting beer- aftertaste is dry, watered down, metallic ash tray. I could see where this beer would be attractive to some folks- those who drink beer and like to lick ash trays. I drank it all just because it made me laugh--they have been brewing this since 1719 and have not figured out someone is adding cig butts to the wort.  B-

118 BOTTLES OF BEER ON THE WALL

September 5, 2012 (Wednesday)
Happy Birthday Mrs Butterbaugh
JOSEPHSBRAU SUMMER BREW
12 FL. OZ., 4.8% ALCOHOL BY VOLUME
Brewed and Bottled by Josephsbrau Brewing Co., San Jose, CA

FROM THE LABEL: "This unique brew is made in the Kolsch style which means using Ale yeast, but fermenting at lager temperatures. Bright straw yellow in color with a flowering, hoppy aroma and flavor. This is clean and refreshing and perfect beer for hot weather."

FROM THE MOUTH: KOLSCH: This would be ok at a large summer barbecue if you were not paying attention to what you were drinking. Has a bitter metallic aftertaste- just can't get past that to enjoy this one. C

SAN MIGUEL CERVEZA NEGRA

119 BOTTLES OF BEER ON THE WALL

September 4, 2012 (Tuesday)
SAN MIGUEL CERVEZA NEGRA aka SAN MIGUEL DARK LAGER
11.2 fl. oz., 5% ALC./VOL.
PRODUCT OF THE PHILIPPINES
Imported by Logret Import and Export Company City of Industry, CA

FROM THE LABEL: " San Miguel Cerveza Negra gives pleasure as unique as this. Made with premium roasted malt, San Miguel Cerveza Negra is a dark lager rich in malt and caramel notes, with a thick creamy foam and a full bodied taste. Truly a distinct pleasure."

FROM THE MOUTH: EURO DARK LAGER: They say their name a lot. Smell is sweet burnt caramel and the taste is lovely. Full bodied, smooth, burnt roasted caramel/toffee malt with some lazy coffee at the end. I tend to lean away from the sweeter beers because I love hops,  but this one has enough complexity to keep me sipping and disappointed when the 11.2 ounces stopped pouring. I enjoyed it- a bit surprised.  A

120 BOTTLES OF BEER ON THE WALL

September 3, 2012 (Sunday)
COTTONWOOD ENDO INDIA PALE ALE
12 FL. OZ., ALC. 6% VOL., SRM 4.5., IBU 66
Brewed and Bottled by Foothills Brewing~Winston~Salem, NC
www.foothillsbrewing.com
+++1/2

FROM THE LABEL: " True to its roots, this American IPA delivers on the floral, hoppy notes that made Cottonwood ENDO a Boone favorite. 100% malted barley and copious amounts of Cascade, Magnum and Chinook hops do the trick, artfully brewed by Foothills."

FROM THE MOUTH: AMERICAN IPA: I had a comment from a follower about the smell of beer. I had mentioned in an earlier post about the smell of beer and why does it matter. He said it prepares us for what is ahead- I like that, thank you Babbo for the comment. I will have to get better at smelling the beer first-so here goes...it smells like I just opened a bag of hops and stuck my nose in it- wonderful aroma! And the taste it excellent. Starts out malty citrus, kiss of  sweet then the hops slowly grab ahold with a light/med bitterness. The bitterness glues itself and lingers in the whole mouth; I am liking this very much indeed. Smooth and nicely balanced. I will look for this one again.Very good!!!A+

DICK'S IPA

121 BOTTLES OF BEER ON  THE WALL

September 2, 2012 (Sunday)
DICK'S IPA
12 fluid ounces., Alc 5.5 % By Vol.
Dick's Brewing Company, Centralia, WA
+++1/2

FROM THE LABEL: " Refreshingly bitter. Product of USA."

FROM THE MOUTH: INDIA PALE ALE: I will keep my fridge stocked with this beer when this blog is over. Anyone know what a Bells Two Hearted tastes like? This comes real close- it is delicious.  A nice citrus/pine hop blends smoothly with the caramel malt- the malt takes a bit away from the hop bitterness but I find it a nice transition. Lovely mouthfeel, good carbonation and a clean, bitter finish. A+

SUMMER OF LAGER
3/4 pint, 12 fl.oz., 5.6% ( NOT ON LABEL)
Brewed and Bottled by Cisco Brewers, Nantucket, MA
and under special agreement Utica, NY
+

FROM THE LABEL: " The Summer of Love was fun they say , but now we are living the Summer of Lager! "Lager" means "to wait a wicked long time until it's ready." We brewed it in the fall, aged it all winter, then sampled it in the Spring. Then again and again until finally we decided to share. Hope you like it. We welcome your comments at (508) 325-5929 or at www.ciscobrewers.com. Please recycle."

FROM "THE FROSTED MUG": A light lager released at the beginning of the summer when Nantucket is just getting it's grove on! It's a classic Bavarian style lager with a delicious malt palate and an assertive noble hop finish. Hints of citrus give this lager a light, refreshing flavor perfect for hot summer nights."

FROM THE MOUTH: MUNICH HELLES LAGER: Prickly and grassy with an astringent after taste- not feeling it. Sorry just can't drink this beer- C
