October 12, 2012 (Friday)
BOATSWAIN H.L.V. ALE- HEAVY LIFT VESSEL
1 PT, 6 FL. OZ. (650 ML), 7% ALC./VOL.
BBB: Rhinelander Brewing Co., LLC, Monroe, WI 53566
+++1/2

FROM THE LABEL: " BOATSWAIN (b'osun) beers are unique brews made in small batches. Our ale has aromas and flavors of sweet roasted malt balanced with moderate bitterness coming from the high levels of hops."

FROM THE MOUTH: AMERICAN STRONG ALE: Aroma: Flat coke, amaretto- vanilla and espresso. Taste is rich- lots of dark caramel malt flavors, dark fruits, vanilla, a drag of smoke and finishes with a quick bite of espresso- sounds like I am talking about a porter or stout? Malt front with a hop back. Nice smooth carbonation. I enjoyed it more as it warmed, the flavors blended well. A

FROM THE LABEL: "Acme IPA is profoundly hoppy, finished with over a pound of fresh whole hops per barrel. The result of this generous hopping is an ale that is deliciously dry and eminently drinkable. India Pale Ale."

FROM THE MOUTH: AMERICAN  IPA: I am not tasting a profound hoppiness but a nice blend of bitter piney hop to a caramel chewy malt. I find this crisp, clean and refreshing- easy drinking. This is a really nice tasting IPA. I will certainly have this again- adore the label, we all need to have more fun... this woman is swinging from a rope with a beer and a smile! A+

GENESIS DRY HOPPED SESSION ALE
12 FL. OZ. (355ml)
BBB Shmaltz Brewing Co., Saratoga Springs, NY
++1/2

FROM THE LABEL: "Why is this beer different from all other beers? In the beginning there was an idea, and it was good: a Gourmet Microbrew to celebrate the bounty of our own American land of milk and honey. Witness, a renewed Genesis: the evolution of our first creation! A smidgen of Middle East inspiration, a dash of West Coast ingenuity and an East Coast garden of brewing delights. The we tasted it, and it was very good. After 5000 years of civilization, savor a microbrew with the chutzpah to keep calling itself The Chosen Beer. From the Golden Gate to the City of Gold, may HE' BREW join in the blessings of your lives. To Life! L'Chaim. Jeremy Cowen, Proprietor. Kosher certified/ Rabbi approved. "

FROM THE MOUTH:  AMERICAN PALE ALE: First I love how excited they are to tell their story- this label is crammed with stories and information- the love their beer. Aroma- floral and pine hops.
insert- what is a Session beer- from beeradvocate:

session beer:
Any beer that contains no higher than 5 percent ABV, featuring a balance between malt and hop characters (ingredients) and, typically, a clean finish - a combination of which creates a beer with high drinkability. The purpose of a session beer is to allow a beer drinker to have multiple beers, within a reasonable time period or session, without overwhelming the senses or reaching inappropriate levels of intoxication. (Yes, you can drink and enjoy beer without getting drunk.)

Taste: I think this is a good Session beer as described above- it is an APA with citrus blended well with malt with a smooth dry finish. malt front with a hop back. I really enjoyed this from pour to last sip. A+

Happy Anniversary Laura!
RED HOOK LONG HAMMER IPA
12 FL. OZ., 6.2% ALC BY VOL
Red Hook Ale Brewing- Woodinville, WA- Portsmouth, NH- Portland, OR
++

FROM THE LABEL: " A big fan of dry hopping, which sounds much dirtier than it is."

FROM THE MOUTH: AMERICAN IPA: Malty aroma. This tastes like a lager on steroids. Not much going on in the hops department and it is a bit astringent  and dry. Really not sure what they are trying to accomplish. If I were not expecting an IPA and lets say they were going for a lager I would probably say "love those steroids." Doesn't pass the mustard for me and I will not buy this one again. Way too many wonderful APA's around to have this one again. B

AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 BEERS

AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 BEERS

So it is October 8, 2012 and I have 43 more beers to go on my journey of 80 beers around the world. I figured just by buying beers randomly I would get to 80 with no problem- wrong! I need to go to Huckleberry's with my paperwork and buy me some international brews!
