XINGU BLACK BEER

184 BOTTLES OF BEER ON THE WALL

June 30, 2012 (Saturday)
Happy Birthday Mike Ferry
XINGU BLACK BEER
12 US FL. OZ., 4.7% ABV (not on label)
Brewed by Cervejaria Sul Brasilera
+

FROM THE LABEL: " Imported from Brazil."

FROM THE MOUTH:  SCHWARBIER: Ok, lots going on here. Isn't the color beautiful, not sure why they call it a black beer other than it is black? I was expecting something along the lines of a Porter or Stout but this is a Black Lager. I am tasting a caramel malt, brown sugar, black cherries, plums, molasses and slight hop flavor, slight.   I could say it is a cherry cola but that would indicate something too simple and too sweet; interesting beer. It's a very light and smooth schwarzbier. Decent and very drinkable. Not what I expected but quite enjoyable. A

BELHAVEN TWISTED THISTLE IPA

185 BOTTLES OF BEER ON THE WALL

June 29, 2012 (Friday)
BELHAVEN TWISTED THISTLE IPA
1 Pt., 0.9fl. oz., 6.1% ABV ( not on label)
Brewed by Belhaven Brewing, Dunbar, East Lothian, Scotland
++1/2

FROM THE LABEL: "A refreshing example of India Pale Ale from the master brewers of Belhaven. The blend of Cascade and Challenger hops combine to produce an abundance of fresh hop aroma that preludes a bitter-dry taste explosion. Crafted from nearly three centuries of brewing heritage at one of Scotlands oldest breweries, this ale from Belhaven will have your taste buds tingling. ESTD 1719. Grown, mashed. fermented, twisted and conditioned in Scotland."

FROM THE MOUTH: INDIA PALE ALE: Not your traditional American IPA, in that I mean this is not trying to outdo the next guy in hop bitterness and attempting to challenge the mouth to scale another rock before it can rest.  The taste is a mild light malt nicely blended with a medium piney hop and including a bit of spiceness leading to an overall impression of refreshment. I am thinking this would be fantastic on tap in Scotland--- road trip! I really like this beer and will have it again, easy drinking. A+

LAKE PLACID HEFEWEIZEN

186 BOTTLES OF BEER ON THE WALL

June 28, 2012 (Thursday)
LAKE PLACID HEFEWEIZEN
TWELVE FLUID OUNCES, 5.6%ABV ( not on label)
2011 Lake Placid Brewing Company, Utica, NY
++1/2

FROM THE LABEL: "Lake Placid Hefeweizen is brewed with German wheat and barley as well as authentic German yeast, resulting in tasty esters, a touch of clove spiceness, and a cloudy, golden appearance. It's a perfect complement to sunny summer days and cool, Adirondack  nights. REAL TOWN, REAL BEER."

FROM THE MOUTH: GERMAN HEFEWEIZEN. Hmmm, a bit of a banana taste going on, with some cloves and a bready yeast- heavy on the bready yeast. Ending is bitter with the flavor of overripe banana! Not my favorite but wouldn't pass it up - probably good in a draft at the bar in the dead of winter. I am not seeing this as a summer beer but heck as long as the sun comes up.. I will be drinking a beer. B

FROM THE LABEL: "We begin with a custom mixture of dark and roasted barley malts, then we add the choicest hops. The resulting ale has a dark chestnut color and deep nutty flavor. Distinctive Dark Ale."

FROM THE MOUTH: DARK ALE:  My new favorite dark ale even if it is a bit on the sweet side- it works because it has a bit of porter burnt log licking to it at the end. Plus my cat is dying tonight and this beer is taking away some of the pain. A

ELLIE'S BROWN ALE

189 BOTTLES OF BEER ON THE WALL

June 25, 2012 (Monday)
ELLIE'S BROWN ALE
12 FL OZ., 5.5% ALC/VOL
Brewed and Bottled by Avery Brewing Co., Boulder, Colorado
++

FROM THE LABLE: "Named after our beloved lab, this beautiful deep russet brew is dominated by a chocolate and brown sugar maltiness with hints of vanilla and nuts, producing a very smooth, well- balanced and quaffable brown ale. Brewed with Rocky Mountain water, malt barley, hops and yeast. est. 1993."

FROM THE MOUTH: BROWN ALE: Not too many labels actually get it right about what they have brewed  and poured into the bottle. Perhaps they say what  they were planning to produce or hope you taste ( sometimes I really strain to find the 'raisin' to no avail) but so often it is romantic drunk talk. So what you read is actually what you get- give it a try, this is an excellent Brown Ale. A+

MAREDSOUS TRIPLE

190 BOTTLES OF BEER ON THE WALL

June 24, 2012 (Sunday)
MAREDSOUS TRIPLE
ALE 11.2 FL.OZ., 10% ALC./VOL.
Brewed and Bottled by Duvel Moortgat, Puurs, Belgium

FROM THE LABEL: "Maredsous Triple is a high fermentation abbey beer, brewed in accordance with the Benedictine tradition of the community of Maredsous Abbey. The beer is refermented in the bottle during the two month ageing period. Maredsous triple should ideally be served at a temperature of 6-10C/42-50F. Contains barely malt.  Abbaye de Maredsous- Rue de Maredsous 11-B5567 Denee."

FROM THE MOUTH: ABBEY TRIPLE:  First sip is heavy malt sweet followed by heavy cherries- sort of feels like whiskey going down, but without the cough.  I am thinking I don't care as much for the 'bottle conditioned' beers, perhaps it is the yeast. Worth trying but not my favorite. B

FRAOCH HEATHER ALE

191 BOTTLES OF BEER ON THE WALL

June 23, 2012 (Saturday)
Anniversary of Eileen Byrne death 21 years ago
FRAOCH HEATHER ALE
12 Fl. Oz., Alc. 5% by Vol.
Brewed and Bottled by Heather Ale LTD, Williams Bros. Brewing Co., Alloa FK10 INT.
 Scotland UK

FROM THE LABEL: Fraoch is Scotlands native ale. Heather ale has been brewed in Scotland since 2000 b.c. Brewed using heather flowers and scottish malt, it has a distinctive floral aroma, full malt character and a dry wine- like finish. As one of the oldest styles of ale in the world there are many legends and folklore surrounding it.

FROM THE WEBSITE:
Fraoch: - The Original Craft Beer; brewed in Scotland since 2000 B.C. The Brotherhood have been guardians of the ancient Gaelic recipe for "leann fraoich" (heather ale) since 1988 and are proud to be the only brewery still producing this unique style of beer and distributing it world wide. A light amber ale with floral peaty aroma, full malt character, and a spicy herbal finish - This beer allows you to literally pour 4000 years of Scottish history into a glass.

HISTORY OF ALE:
The term "ale" was initially used to describe a drink brewed without hops, unlike "beer." It has often now come to mean a bitter-tasting barley beverage fermented at room temperature. In some British usage, however, in homage to the original distinction, it is not now used except in compounds (such as "pale ale" or as "real ale", a term adopted in opposition to the pressurised beers developed by industrial brewers in the 1960s, and used of a warm-fermented unpasteurised beer served from the cask (though not stout or porter).
Ale typically has bittering agent(s) to balance the sweetness of the malt and to act as a preservative. Ale was originally bittered with gruit, a mixture of herbs (sometimes spices) which was boiled in the wort prior to fermentation. Later, hops replaced the gruit blend in common usage as the sole bittering agent.

FROM THE MOUTH:HEATHER ALE:  Never having  'heather ale' before and interested in a beer that obviously is not brewed with hops I had to post a bit of history. This beer is sweet, but in a unique way. The sugariness is somewhat different from other beers, kind of like honey suckle or something. It is certainly floral tasting but it is not coming from the hops?! A very interesting beer and damn can't you just imagine 4000 years ago how many Viking warriors got drunk on this stuff!!! Warms my heart. Pretty cool to be drinking an original Ale. I would have it again. A

SILENT TREATMENT PALE ALE

192 BOTTLES OF BEER ON THE WALL

June 22, 2012 (Friday)
SILENT TREATMENT PALE ALE
1 PINT, 6 FL. OZ., 5.75% ALC/VOL
NO- LI Brewing LLC., Spokane, WA
+++1/2

FROM THE LABEL: "Made in the USA since 1983. Fib Free Ales Brewed in Spokane."

FROM THE MOUTH: PALE ALE: I am pretty excited to be featuring a Spokane beer. I ran across this at Huckleberry's than noticed the pints at Albertsons as well. I believe they have 3 beers and they are located in downtown Spokane so ...I must stop in for a Pint. Their previous name was Northern Lights- I remember them now but have not had the pleasure of sampling one of their beers..here we go..... begins with a citrus flavor from the Cascade hops; not sure about the Cluster hop ( may give a currant aroma flavor but I am not tasting nor smelling it) but something is clinging bitterly to the tongue. Not like lasts night beer that played a bit much with a high malt, this is more serious hop investing. Wonder what the IBUs are? Wish they would include that on the label; also wish they would have contacted me when they were looking for an artist to design the label. A-

FROM THE STORE: Huckleberry's but I have seen in sold in most locations around Spokane

ALERT: I think I am going to come up a bit short of bottled beers- I may have to go to local pubs and sample draft beers- what a tragedy.......I will keep you posted.

Yes, this is a long quote this evening but well worth the read. It is one of my favorite quotes from one of the greatest men to serve this country- Abraham Lincoln.

"I have been shown in the files of the War Department a statement of the Adjutant General of Massachusetts, that you are the mother of five sons who have died gloriously on the field of battle. I feel how weak and fruitless must be any words of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering to you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save. I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours, to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the altar of Freedom." DICK DANGER ALE

193 BOTTLES OF BEER ON THE WALL

June 21, 2012 (Thursday)
DICK DANGER ALE
12 fluid ounces., Alc. 5.2% By Vol.
Dicks Brewery Co., Centralia, Washington
++

FROM THE LABEL: Established in 1994

FROM THE WEBSITE: COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTIONOur flagship beer. A large percentage of black malt give this distinctive ale its dark brown/black color and that slightly roasted flavor. Magnum hops provide a backbone of bitterness and large additions of Mt. Hood hops later in the boil come right through in the finish. The result is a highly drinkable dark ale which bridges the gap between pale and porter.

FROM THE MOUTH: BROWN ALE: Mt Hood hops- "Soft American variety..frequently used in styles that require only a subtle hop aroma." Loved the soft brown caramel pour. Smell is malty sweet and first sip is a heavy caramel malt that slides nicely into a well balanced slightly, sneaky bitter hop than finishes with a total surprise of very mild coffee and perhaps cola. I really like the complexity and the smooth transitions. Hops hang on the tongue for a spell. I think this is well done, a bit on the sweet side at first sip but it mellows as you drink it. A

12 FLUID OUNCES., 6.0 Alc % By Vol.
Brewed and Bottled by Ninkasi Brewing Company , Eugene, Oregon 541-344- BREW
+++1/2

FROM THE LABEL: "A crisp refreshing Spring Seasonal Ale. Spring forward with this refreshing seasonal ale . Notes of toasted malt up front, finished with a bright and refreshing Northwest hop aroma. It's a session beer that everyone can enjoy! The ancient Sumerians worshipped the beer they made, and praised the Goddess Ninkasi for a miracle of fermention. Beer is a staple of civilization. WORSHIP THE GODDESS.

FROM THE SITE:
  • Statistics
  • First Brewed: 2009
  • Starting Gravity: 1052
  • Bitterness: 38 IBUs
  • Alcohol %: 6.0
  • Malt: 2 Row Pale Malt, Biscuit Malt
  • Hops: Santiam, Simcoe, Ahtanum

  • FROM THE MOUTH:  ALE: Tends to lean towards an IPA. Begins with a toasted malt flavor but quickly and I mean quickly hits you with a  SPIKY PINEY hop. It finishes with a lingering bitter aftertaste. Not much else going on. I would say it is a bit heavy and serious to call itself  'refreshing'. It gets better towards the end- begins to balance out a bit more; perhaps it is the old numb tongue thing I have spoken about before- the IUBs seem higher because of the bitter, numb tongue thingy! I would have enjoyed a bit more citrus or some floral additions- the bitterness needs a friend. B+

    COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTIONSweetgrass APA is a Pale Ale of distinction! 2009 Great American Beer Festival Gold Medal winner in the American Pale Ale category, this crisp and fragrant beer is hopped and dry-hopped with plenty of Amarillos and Cascades. Try it with any bold, flavorful food to complement its citrusy, resinous spiciness. Alcohol 6.0% by volume.

    Awards 2009 - Gold Medal, American Pale Ale - Great American Beer Festival
    Specifications
    Original Gravity: 15.0 Plato (1.060)
    Malts: Idaho 2-Row Pale, German Vienna & CaraAmber
    International Bittering Units: 60
    Hops: Columbus, Galena, Amarillo, Simcoe, Cascade, & dry hopped with Cascade
    Alcohol by Volume: 6.0%

    Editor’s Note: formerly called Sweetgrass India Pale Ale

    FROM THE MOUTH: AMERICAN PALE ALE: This is just a bad ass beer despite it's name. Reminds me of a grass we have out her in Washington called 'windgrass'; you can almost see the wind moving in the grass when you say it...wind...grass.  Anyway..the beer- this has a strong backbone of piny hops (Simcoe) and  we read about the Amarillo hop when we had the Deschutes Twilight, its where we get that orange aroma. The Columbus hop gives us a bit of a woody flavor and the Simcoe hop is where we get the grapefruit flavor. You smell mostly orange and grapefruit and a high malt. A bit chewy, Pretty tasty- so we have a high malt and bad ass hop flavor that sticks around way after you have finished your beer.  These guys are serious about their beer- they gave us Original Gravity, IBUs and not sure what Lov. means but it all looks bad ass to me. A+

    FROM THE LABEL: " Sierra Nevada is brewed with generous amounts of deep roasted malts providing a bold roasted coffee and dark chocolate flavor with a hint of sweetness. This full- bodied American version of the traditional black ale is perfectly balanced , with big malt flavors and earthy whole cone hops."

    COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTIONSilver Medal Winner, Great American Beer Festival, Stout 1988, 1989. Sierra Nevada Stout is a creamy and full-bodied example of this traditional style ale. Very dark and very rich, the Stout displays a pronounced roasted flavor.

    FROM THE MOUTH: I don't think you can go wrong with the Sierra Nevada Brewing Company beers. I have been very impressed so far with  the quality and drinkability. Smells great if you like coffee beans and chocolate. Flavor is slightly sweet with roasted malt, dark chocolate and coffee all swirling around in this medium bodied brew, quite bitter aftertaste.

    FROM THE WEBSITE:
    Victoria was produced for the first time in 1865. The brewery and brand were acquired by Grupo Modelo in 1935, making Victoria Mexico’s oldest beer brand. Victoria has been brewed consistently as a Vienna-style lager for 145 years. Victoria is brewed and bottled in Mexico by Grupo Modelo, Mexico's largest brewer, operating seven state-of-the-art breweries throughout Mexico

    Victoria is a medium-bodied Vienna-style lager, with a rich amber color and toasted malt character, which is perfectly balanced with a smooth, crisp finish and low to mild hop aroma. Victoria should not be served with a lime.

    FROM THE MOUTH: VIENNA STYLE LAGER: Um, No. Tastes like it sat in a can for a few years after it fell off the truck.  Flat, bland and watery. Redeeming quality is the small amount of hop bitterness in the finish. C

    DESCHUTES TWILIGHT SUMMER ALE

    198 BOTTLES OF BEER ON THE WALL

    DESCHUTES TWILIGHT SUMMER ALE SEASONAL
    12 FL. OZ., 5% ALC. BY VOL.
    Deschutes Brewery, Bend Oregon
    ++1/2

    FROM THE LABEL: "Courageously crafted since 1988. For fellow explorers everywhere. Grills on. Shoes off. Summer has its own rules. As luck would have it, it also has its own beer. Enjoy. Down goes another brewing dogma. Select malts and a hearty dose of bold Amarillo hops deliver full- on flavor and crafted nuance in a spry summer style. Enjoy chilled as the days linger."

    I was interested in what Amarillo hops were so here you go:

    Amarillo is an aroma variety of hops. The Amarillo variety, designated VGXP01 c.v., was discovered by Virgil Gamache Farms Inc. in one of their hop yards in Washington State and propagated and introduced by them as Amarillo [1]. Unlike most varieties of hops, which may be acquired and propagated by the purchase of rhizomes, Amarillo hops are privately grown only by Virgil Gamache Farms; also the organization holds a trademark on the name "Amarillo" for hops.

  • The resultant aroma is of medium strength and very distinct.[1]
  • The aroma is described as flowery, spicy and citrus-like with a distinct orange bouquet.
  • The hop is good for flavor and aroma
  • It can also be used for bittering effectively because of the low cohumulone content

  • FROM THE MOUTH:  AMERICAN BLOND ALE: Reading about the hop in this beer helped me figure out what I was tasting and also I am beginning to understand the importance of hops! I really like this ale for a variety of reasons- it sips easy, it's not flaky (it knows what it wants to be), it has a smooth transition of malt to hops, it is complex enough to call itself a beer and it makes me want to raft a river. One was not enough for a Saturday night after a long hike in the a.m. and a day filled with outdoor living. A+

    FROM THE MOUTH: STOUT:  I know I don't talk aroma much but this one needs mentioning because it smells like a German chocolate cake- yum. Taste is a strong black roasted dark chocolate, bitter burnt coffee with some earthy hops- yup- licking the bottom of a log , as I like to say about stouts. FROM THE LABEL: "San Francisco's famous Anchor Porter brand is made in one of the smallest and most traditional breweries in the world by the brewers of Anchor Steam Beer. Our old fashioned porter is virtually handmade, with an exceptional respect for the ancient art of brewing. We use 100% malted barley, generous amounts of fresh, whole hops, entirely natural carbonation and a simple , natural brewing process which is like no other in the world. The deep black color, the thick , creamy head and the intensely rich flavor of Anchor Porter made in San Francisco since 197, have earned this delicious and unique brew a worldwide reputation for outstanding quality. It is aesthetically pleasing and wholly superior in every respect."

    FROM THE MOUTH: PORTER: Everything you would expect in a porter, dark roasted malts up front, with loads of coffee and  mild chocolate notes, no surprises- a bit thin, perhaps. Someone said bananas... I couldn't taste bananas. I have had better Porters but this is enjoyable. B

    OAKEN BARREL RAZZ-WHEAT

    203 BOTTLES OF BEER ON THE WALL

    June 11, 2012 (Monday)
    OAKEN BARREL RAZZ-WHEAT
    12 FL. OZ., O.G. 12' P, ABV 5%( not on label)
    Brewed and Bottle By Oaken Barrel Brewing Co. Greenwood, IN

    FROM THE LABEL: "Fresh. Local. Handcrafted. Raspberry wheat beer."

    COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTIONBrewed with fresh Oregon Raspberries, Razz has a slightly sweet flavor and clean refreshing finish to quench even the biggest thirst. Unlike syrupy impostors, Razz balances the crisp, citrus-like tones of wheat malt and the tartness of the berries-without overpowering the natural flavor of the beer.

    FROM THE MOUTH: FRUIT/VEGETABLE BEER: What an interesting color- it is more of a cloudy, persimmon look. Wasn't sure what to expect after it poured out this pale color and smelling  raspberries..........hmm, mostly flat tart raspberry taste; tastes a bit like a wine cooler but not that sweet. Can't taste much beer here so don't know what to think- a confused beer or a wayward wine cooler. On a hot Indiana afternoon, when the sweat is dripping down the back of your neck, this might be something you could pull from the cooler and chug. B

    FROM THE STORE: Another sample from my sister Peg all the way from Indiana- thanks Peg.

    HENRY WEINHARD'S INDIA PALE ALE

    204 BOTTLES OF BEER ON THE WALL

    June 10, 2012 (Sunday)
    HENRY WEINHARD'S INDIA PALE ALE
    12 FL. OZ., 6% ABV & 45 IBU's( not on label)
    Blitz-Weinhard Brewing Co., Hood River, OR USA
    +++1/2

    FROM  THE LABEL: " Pacific Northwest Ale since 1856."

    COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTIONRevered by beer lovers the world over for its bold flavor, India Pale Ale was born of necessity in the 1700s. Its high alcohol content and copiously-hopped brewing process were required to survive the journey to British soldiers in India. We brew our India Pale Ale in Hood River, Oregon with flavorful Pacific Northwest hops and the finest two-row barley malt. The result is a refreshing brew with an aromatic, full-hop flavor anchored by caramel malt sweetness—perfect for sharing with friends on a Pacific Northwest summer’s day.

    FROM THE MOUTH:INDIA PALE ALE:  Mostly bitter taste, can't taste citrus or malt...it is mostly bitter. Not much going on with this beer. Kind of disappointing for me. B-

    STOCKYARD OATMEAL STOUT

    205 BOTTLES OF BEER ON THE WALL

    June 9, 2012 (Saturday)
    STOCKYARD OATMEAL STOUT
    12 FL. OZ., 5.2% ALC. BY VOL.
    Brewed and Bottled by JosephsBrau Brewery Co., San Jose, CA
    ++

    FROM THE LABEL: " A deliciously creamy stout in the Irish tradition with its rich tan head intact, this deep and dark- colored beer has the aroma and flavor of chocolate, roasted oats, and coffee- all derived from the specialty malts used in the brewing process."

    FROM THE MOUTH: OATMEAL STOUT: Straight forward in that it is not complex. Mostly a taste of dark roasted coffee, toffee and high on the malt side- rather sweet actually. It is not as smooth as some stouts in that it has a higher carbonation but it does not take away from the enjoyment. I will buy this again and at the price $1 it is a bargain! A
