FROM THE LABEL:" San Francisco's celebrated Old Foghorn Ale has been virtually handmade by the brewers of Anchor Steam beer, in one of the worlds smallest and most traditional breweries since 1975. Our barley wine-style ale, the first of its kind in the modern times in the United States, has a luscious depth of flavor that makes it ideal for sipping after dinner. It is made with top fermented yeast, fresh whole hops and 'first wort' ,the richest runnings of thick ale malt mash. Old Foghorn is 'dry hopped' in the classic ale tradition and aged in our cellars until it attains the perfect balance of malty sweetness, estery fruitness and exquisite hop character, for which it is known throughout the world."

FROM THE MOUTH: Barley- wine style ale: Aren't you wondering how they could get all that on the label! It is actually written on the small label that goes around the neck. They are quite proud of themselves, aren't they! I was a bit apprehensive when I saw 'top fermented yeast' because it brought back awful memories of Maudite ( check March 4th blog); but in checking my notes - "fermented on yeast base and bottle fermented' is what should cause alarms to go off. First sip is a surprise because it is very malty, probably most malty beer I have had so far; that means on the sweet side; then is comes in with some medium fruity heat and ends there. Personally, it needs a bit more of the hop bite at the end. B+

FROM THE GRILL: Saturday night is Pizza night and this sweet beer would go well with some spicy toppings.

FROM THE STORE: Huckleberries
