ALASKAN BLACK IPA
12 FL. OZ., 6.4% ALC/VOL
Alaskan Brewing Co. Brewed and Bottled in Juneau, AK
++++

FROM THE LABEL: "Spring Season release. Black India Pale Ale."

FROM THE MOUTH:BLACK IPA: Should have had this beer on a Monday night. Anyone who knows me ...knows how crazy Monday is around here. If you are paying attention you would note that ALL beers on Mondays have nothing on the label! I digress...almost ready to talk about the beer...isn't this a neat label- love it! Ok, now the beer. Delicious! I even said out loud, " hmm, I love this beer." Sort of a stout, sort of Guinness, but think IPA, so not as...thick, heavy or smooth and a bit more of a spicky bite of hops in the end. Nice complex flavor- has that peat taste like a Guinness. Good job! A

The barley comes to Massachusetts all the way from Munich, Belgium and England. The beer has a toasty malt flavor with a dry , hoppy finish."

FROM THE MOUTH: American Amber Lager: Well, isn't that a great story from the label..I almost want to cry in my beer now. THIS is a very good lager, by far one of the best lagers I have had so far. Well blended with lots of character AND a touch of hops. Don't find a taste of hops in too many lagers- at least I haven't had one so far. OLD FOGHORN

282 BOTTLES OF BEER ON THE WALL
March 24, 2012 (Saturday)
OLD FOGHORN
12 FL. OZ.,
Brewed and Bottled by Anchor Brewery Co., San Francisco, CA since 1975
++

FROM THE LABEL:" San Francisco's celebrated Old Foghorn Ale has been virtually handmade by the brewers of Anchor Steam beer, in one of the worlds smallest and most traditional breweries since 1975. Our barley wine-style ale, the first of its kind in the modern times in the United States, has a luscious depth of flavor that makes it ideal for sipping after dinner. It is made with top fermented yeast, fresh whole hops and 'first wort' ,the richest runnings of thick ale malt mash. Old Foghorn is 'dry hopped' in the classic ale tradition and aged in our cellars until it attains the perfect balance of malty sweetness, estery fruitness and exquisite hop character, for which it is known throughout the world."

FROM THE MOUTH: Barley- wine style ale: Aren't you wondering how they could get all that on the label! It is actually written on the small label that goes around the neck. They are quite proud of themselves, aren't they! I was a bit apprehensive when I saw 'top fermented yeast' because it brought back awful memories of Maudite ( check March 4th blog); but in checking my notes - "fermented on yeast base and bottle fermented' is what should cause alarms to go off. First sip is a surprise because it is very malty, probably most malty beer I have had so far; that means on the sweet side; then is comes in with some medium fruity heat and ends there. Personally, it needs a bit more of the hop bite at the end. B+

FROM THE GRILL: Saturday night is Pizza night and this sweet beer would go well with some spicy toppings.

Tiny sits inside my arms every night and purrs as I write my blog; she usually smells every beer but hasn't develped a liking to anything yet. She came to me from a neighbor who found her on the side of the road along with her 11 brothers and sisters and a momma who had been shot. Unfortunately, Tiny has Feline Leukemia so she could die tomorrow; doctors say 1-3 years at best. So... she reminds me everyday to slow down, pick her up, play, hold her and listen to her purr........ because tomorrow may not come. FROM THE LABEL: "Brewed from the finest malted barley, yeast, hops,and pristine Boonville mineral water. Consistently judged one of the worlds finest breweries. Boont ESB is one of the finest examples of the Craft Brewers Art. The generous amounts of malted barley are offset by four separate additions of Pacific Northwest hops. This combination creates a masterpiece in balance between the ambrosial sweetness of the malt and the exquisite taste and savory fragrance of teh spicy hops. This satisfying brew is not for the 'light beer drinker." To fully appreciate the Extra Special Beer its best flavors are realized at 45 - 52 degrees. Enjoy with fine cheese, a well seasoned meal or simply by itself."

FROM THE MOUTH: I am not tasting the sweetness as much as the "four separate hops" but it is blended well, has a bitter kick at the end. And as it states above...not for the light beer drinker. I also see a Gold Medal on the label as well as the bear with antlers- very creative design. A

FROM THE LABEL: "ALE BREWED WITH ANEHEIM CHILIES AND CINNAMON.

Epic: 1.) Heroic and impressive quality. 2.) Surpassing the usual or ordinary, particularly in scope and size. 3.) Of, constituting, having to do with, or suggestive of literary epic. the tenth in an 'epic' series. As with any good epic, herein lies the promise of larger-than-life experiences, heroics and twists & turns as the adventure unfolds. this bottle-conditioned ale is chapter ten, and is specifically designed to be aged until sometime after December 12, 2012. Provided you can wait that long. At that time, enjoy it in a 'vertical' tasting along with its ten Stone Vertical Ale brethren. Each one unique in its year of release. Each with its own 'twist & turn" in the plot line. Each one released one year, one month and one day from the previous years edition. This years Stone Veritical Epic Ale might justifiably be considered the non sequitur edition. We somehow came to the conclusion that adding Anaheim chilies from New Mexico's Hatch Valley, plus whole cinnamon stickes, to an amber -hued brew fermented with Belgium Flanders Golden Ale yeast ( which provides fairly intense character with lots of clove and banana overtones) would create a very tasty result. And we believe it does. The Aneheim chili is known for it's rich flavor more than endorphin-inducing heat, and the cinnamon adds a nice twist...part of the promise behind the Vertical Epic Ale series itself. As with any epic, remember that it is not just the destination, but the journey."

FROM THE MOUTH: Amber Ale but not really. Nope, doesnt work for me, all I can taste is heavy cloves and cinnamon with a bit of burn at the end. Each sip is a bit painful- way to overwhelming- I think I can even smell it sitting here on my desk. C-

PERSNICKETY PALE ALE
1 pt. 6 fl. oz., 5.7% Alc. by Vol.
Brewed and Bottled at Two Beers Brewery Co, Seattle , WA
+++1/2

FROM THE LABEL: "It's the little things that matter. The details, the intricacies, the things often left unnoticed. The fine tuned balance of this beer can be attributed to its complete Northwest ingredients and its obsession with being the best Pale Ale possible. Cheers! 98% Washington grain, 100% Washington hops. 36 IBUs."

FROM THE MOUTH: Pale Ale: First of all I appreciate when the list the IBUs, wish all beers would do that. Remember an IBU is a measure of the actual bitterness of a beer as contributed by the alpha acid from hops. Because the apparent bitterness of a beer is subjective to the taste of the drinker and the balancing malt sweetness of the beer this is not always an accurate measure of the "hoppiness" of a beer. But, generally speaking, beers with IBUs of less than 20 have little to no apparent hops presence- most of the beers you see advertised on Super Bowl Sunday- the Lager. Beers with IBUs from 20 to 45 are the most common and have mild to pronounced hops presence- a lot of your IPAs, Wheat Beers and Porters. Beers with IBUs greater than 45 are heavily hopped and can be quite bitter. So, this is on the bitter side ( good bitter) and not showing very much malt- it wears the pants in the family. A

FROM THE GRILL: Something mild, perhaps a Grilled Provolone on a hearty Rye
