FROM THE LABEL: "Lompoc beer means local beer"
"100 IBU" Here is a definition of IBU - International Bittering Units. This is a measure of the actual bitterness of a beer as contributed by the alpha acid from hops. Because the apparent bitterness of a beer is subjective to the taste of the drinker and the balancing malt sweetness of the beer this is not always an accurate measure of the "hoppiness" of a beer. But, generally speaking, beers with IBUs of less than 20 have little to no apparent hops presence. Beers with IBUs from 20 to 45 are the most common and have mild to pronounced hops presence. Beers with IBUs greater than 45 are heavily hopped and can be quite bitter.
FROM THE PAPER: ( The Micro Brew Review) "To call C-NOTE very hoppy would be an understatement. It's brewed with the seven "C" hops (Crystal, Cluster, Cascade, Chinook, Centennial, Columbus and Challenger) and pushes the bitterness limit to 100 IBU. Above the sheen of the amber beer, big bubbles pop away. Nutty, biscuity scents fill out this aromatic beer's sweet orange and caramel bouquet. Juicy orange and dank pine blossom above C-NOTE's toffee, toasty malt backbone, which gains a nutty complexity during the swallow. While this beer is undoubtedly focusing on its hop flavors and aggressive bitterness, it's beauty is in its balance: Despite its high IBU count, its malt foundation props up the headlining citrusy, piney hops As it wraps up a dry on the tongue, lingering toast and citrus flavors remain."
FROM THE MOUTH: So, this has 100 IBU's which means it is heavily hopped! Yippee, I finally have a beer that defines what heavy hopping tastes like!!! So we will automatically give this a 5 for our hop rating and possibly I will have to readjust some of the beers if this is indeed a 5. Defintion of HOPPY according to THE GREAT BEER GUIDE: Herbal, zesty, earthy, cedary, piney, appetizingly bitter. THAT'S my beer! You can smell the hops before you taste them. A
